What's Happening in Cedar City, UT, Brian Head, UT, Parowan, UT and the surrounding areas.April 29th – May 5th – This week not only signals the end of April but the beginning of Archaeology Month and the first event can be found in the heart of Cedar City at the Frontier Homestead with Archaeology Day. Talk about tradition, bring the whole family for a day of hands on activities. Also this week be sure to visit the BNB Swiss Car Show, Spring Day at Red Acre Farm, lots of live music and performing arts. Don’t forget to take the kids to plant a flower for mom and you will not want to miss a Night on Broadway with the Parowan Community Choir! As a last note CONGRATS to all the Southern Utah University Graduates!

MONDAY, APRIL 29th

SUMA: Senior BFA Capstone Exhibition held Monday – Saturday 11:00 am – 6:00 pm at Southern Utah Museum of Art – SUMA (13 S 300 W, Cedar City), admission is FREE. This exhibit showcases the culmination of the undergraduate art studio experience for graduating students and includes work from a variety of artistic disciplines: art education, graphic design, ceramics, sculpture, illustration, photography, painting, drawing, and printmaking. Family Swim Night open from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm at the Cedar City Aquatic Center (2090 W Royal Hunte Dr, Cedar City). Admission includes: 2 adults & 4 kids for only $10, additional family members are regular price. For information call 435-865-9223.

CHS Percussion and Jazz Ensembles held 7:30 pm in the Cedar High School Auditorium (703 W Redmen Way, Cedar City). Performing award winning State Festival music as well as a tribute to the legendary, and Mr. Shirts’ favorite band, Chicago.

TUESDAY, APRIL 30th

Frontier Homestead: Children’s Story Time held 10:00 am at the Frontier Homestead State Park Museum (635 N Main St, Cedar City), admission is FREE. This is an opportunity for preschool children to learn about the past through stories and history-related activities. Fiddlers Fun Center $2 Tuesday held every Tuesday at Fiddlers Fun Center (170 E Fiddlers Canyon Rd, Cedar City). Come enjoy Movies for $2, $1 popcorn, $1 Pizza, and always stay & play at our state of the art Arcade facility.

Jazz at Off The Cuff held 7:00 pm at Off The Cuff Comedy Improvisation (913 S Main St, Cedar City), admission is $5. SUU and Iron County Students are FREE! The Shawn Owens Project brings their groovy/funky jazz sounds to the stage for an amazing musical experience. You won’t want to miss this exciting performance. Opening the concert will be Jazz@OTC regular house band The Cedar Jazz Dectet!

WEDNESDAY, MAY 1st

Art Exhibit: Navajo Children, Weaving the Future held Monday – Thursday 9:00 am – 9:00 pm & Friday – Saturday 9:00 am – 6:00 pm in the Cedar City Library (303 N 100 E, Cedar City), admission is FREE. Hand made rugs and blankets have always been an important part of Native American culture and economy. Weaving techniques and patterns have traditionally been passed down from mothers and grandmothers to daughters. For information call 435-586-6661. (ends June 5th)

SUMA Create Playdate program held 11:00 am at Southern Utah Museum of Art – SUMA (13 S 300 W, Cedar City), FREE and open to all preschool children (3 yrs to 5 yrs) and their parents. Each 45-minute creative playdate will begin with a story and end with hands-on creative activities in theatre, dance, music, or visual art. For information call 435-586-5432.

Wonder Wednesdays held 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm in the Frontier Homestead State Park (635 N Main St, Cedar City), admission is FREE. This new program is held in conjunction with early out Wednesdays for elementary schools in the Iron County School District. Children accompanied by an adult can drop by anytime between 2-4 pm for make-n-take activities or self-guided programming.

Pop up Cafe from 11:00 am – 1:30 pm at Art Works Gallery (16 N 100 W, Cedar City). Best kept secret in Cedar! The farmer who loves to cook with the food she grows pops up in town once a week! She makes: seasonal sandwiches, soup, salads, scones, tarts, quiche, cookies, and other delectable goodies. Stay and eat in the art gallery or take it to go. You can grab something for dinner too. 36th annual Suzuki Strings Spring Concert held 7:00 pm at the Heritage Center Theatre (105 N 100 E, Cedar City), $5 suggested donation. Featuring works by Telemann and Mozart, fiddle tunes, Some Where Over the Rainbow, Vivaldi’s Spring from The Four Seasons and more. The upcoming Spring Concert features all the students involved in the program, from very young beginners to advanced players. Live Music: MainMan at Mike’s Tavern (90 W Hoover Ave, Cedar City), advanced tickets are $5 or $10 at the door. Door open at 9:00 pm, Modern Love Child will perform at 10:00 pm and MainMan with actor Chris Mintz-Plasse will perform at 11:00 pm. MainMan is an indie/ alt/ jam rock band based in LA formed by actor Chris Mintz-Plasse (Superbad, Kick Ass) and friends. Special Guests Modern Love Child will open and Hosted by DJ Janelle!

FRIDAY, MAY 3rd

Southern Utah University’s 120th Annual Commencement Ceremonies take place Friday, May 3, and we are ecstatic to welcome the Class of 2019 to the SUU Alumni Association! The traditional processional begins at 8:30 a.m. followed by the University Commencement Ceremony at 9 a.m. in the America First Event Center. Cedar Saturday Market held 9:00 am – 1:00 pm in the IFA parking lot (summer) & inside (winter) (905 S Main St, Cedar City), admission is FREE.

Kids Plant a FREE Color Bowl for Mom held 9:00 am – 6:00 pm at Ladybug Nursery, FREE. Kids get ready for Mother’s Day. Plant a free color bowl for Mom! At both the Cedar City (42 S Westview Dr, Cedar City) and Enoch (4606 N Minersville Hwy, Enoch) locations.

Red Acre Farm: Spring Day held 10:00 am – 1:00 pm at Red Acre Farms (2322 W 4375 N, Cedar City), there is no fee for activities or walking the farm, a late breakfast is available for $8 and includes Farm Girl flapjacks, sausage, and fresh eggs made to order. Come join us, activities include: May Pole, Plant a Seed, Story Time visit Virginia and all the other critters.  Live music from our local favorite bluegrass band, the Washburn family. BNB Swiss + Car Show held 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at BNB Swiss (436 S Cross Hollow Rd, Cedar City), admission is FREE. Introducing the community to the BNB Swiss, come see inside their cabins, grab a bite to eat enjoy activities and events.

Archaeology Day held 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Frontier Homestead State Park Museum (635 N Main St, Cedar City), admission $2 per person or $5 per family. Participate in activities involving Native American games, history, crafts, and skills as well as a variety of demonstrators. Also enjoy Paiute Dancing and story telling (times TBA). Wildfire Community Preparedness Day held 11:00 am – 2:00 pm at the Kolob Fire Station (I-15 Exit #40, turn west). Meet the New Harmony Fire Firefighter, see their equipment, and learn how to prepare for the next wildfire. This is a great chance to learn about how we fight fire and what you can do to make your home safer. Hotdogs and ice cream will be served.

Ignite Dance Company presents Rompere Lo Stampo – Break the Mold held 7:00 pm in the Heritage Center Theater (105 N 100 E, Cedar City), admission is FREE. Donations are appreciated. Special guest appearances by: St George Dance Company and Cedar City Junior Ballet.

SUNDAY, MAY 5th

OPEN Grove Community Beltane held 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm at Utah Goddess Temple (5472 N 3575 W, Cedar City), donating $33-$13. ALL are welcome and invited to join us as we celebrate the turning of the wheel at our annual Beltane event. We will be feasting, dancing around the Maypole and much more! This is a High Holy Day and we ask that each guest wear something festive and bring a potluck dish to share. Enjoy a day with Family and Friends take a trip to one of our beautiful National Parks, even if Visitor Centers are closed there is still public access to the Parks. Appreciate a winter hike through Zion, Bryce or Kolob Canyons. (Open all week, so if you can’t make it today go any time)

Did you know Cedar City has 8 city-owned parks? With tons of grass, lots of shade, and play structures for the kids; any of the City Parks make for a great afternoon with your family. Art Works Gallery: Brian Hoover – Solo Show: “Visual Contraptions” Tuesday – Saturday 11:00 am – 6:00 pm at Art Works Gallery (16 N 100 W, Cedar City), admission is FREE. Utah artist, and SUU Professor of Art, Brian Hoover, will be featured in a solo show at Art Works Gallery. The show, entitled “Visual Contraptions” will feature collection of new works by Hoover, as well as earlier, significant works. (ends May 24th)
